Speech and program with Dr. Wangiri Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize winner.

St. Benedict's Abbey, Atchison, KS

. Dr. Maathai will deliver a keynote address during a special ceremony at 2 p.m. on January 28, 2007 in the Student Unionšs Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.   The public portion of her visit will include her speech, a book signing, and a student forum.  Maathai, from Kenya, was honored with the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to sustainable development, democracy and peace. Following her undergraduate education at Benedictine College in Atchison, she went on to be Africašs first female Ph.D.  She founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental organization, in 1977 and is currently serving as Assistant Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Wildlife in Kenya. She is the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize and is the only Nobel winner who is a graduate of a Catholic college in America.

Accomodations: Sat. night - Heritage conference center. email leels for details as room availablity is limited. Optional Sunday night at the Abbey guest house which has modest accomodations with 2 single beds in each. $20 donation per person. The Abbey is surrounded by nature and sits high on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. Food is extra. Tell if you are available to drive.

Other Activities: We will be touring the abbey and Benedictine college with Steve Kelley. We can participate in the monks vigils and prayers.... and Ft. Blaine will be joining us for supper on Saturday night.
